People all over the desert area are doing so much more with smaller homes by creating living space in the smallest of room. And, it works! Use the following 4 ideas as a guideline when you are in need of maximizing small spaces.
1. When possible, use your walls and ceilings
If floor space is at a premium, you can optimize it by removing things from it. Can you hang your bicycle on the wall or ceiling? Or, try to install book shelves above your doorway and/or inside the wall. Remove infrequently used appliances, boxes and china to the space above your kitchen cabinets. Use corners to your advantage- If used properly, corners can provide additIonal storage space.
2. Brighten up the interior
Appearances can be deceiving. The more light inside a room, the larger it appears. If natural light is available, use it to your advantage by hanging sheer curtains and open up the blinds. If natural light is not available or only minimally, be sure to light your rooms with lamps, chandeliers or sconces. If you’re thinking of repainting, shy away from darker shades as they tend to visually limit space. Go with lighter shades whenever possible. It’s a good idea to brighten up a home of any size, especially if you plan to sell in the near future.
3. Use multi-functional furniture
Instead of a bulky coffee table and couch, think about replacing them with chests, ottomans, benches and a sleeper sofa all which have interior storage space. Try using furniture which can be tucked away such as collapsible or nesting end tables which can be folded or tucked away when needed. Use vertical bookcases then push bigger furniture against a wall so that any open space is not broken up.
4. Always use the outdoors to your advantage
Keep your lawn well manicured as well as flowerbeds. This will help ease a feeling of being crowded out by overgrowth. Install a grill on the patio which can extend your kitchen and dining areas. Congestion in your garage can be relieved by purchasing a tool shed or a sheltered area in which to place any recreation equipment.
